Orange Date Smoothie

Moroccan-style orange and date smoothies bring together fresh citrus, soft dried fruit and a lightly perfumed floral note in a drink that is both refreshing and satisfying. The oranges give brightness and acidity, while dates provide mellow sweetness and body without needing added sugar. Greek yoghurt makes the texture creamy, ice keeps it thick and chilled, and a little cinnamon adds warmth against the orange blossom water. It is best served straight from the blender, when the texture is frothy and cold.

Why this recipe works

  • Fast from start to finish: Everything is blended raw, so the drink comes together in about 10 minutes.
  • Naturally sweet: Soft dates sweeten the smoothie without overpowering the fresh citrus.
  • Creamy but refreshing: Greek yoghurt gives body and tang, while orange and ice keep the finish cold and bright.

Ingredient notes

  • Choose soft dates: Very soft dried dates blend more easily and help create a smoother texture.
  • Use orange blossom water carefully: Its floral flavour is concentrated, so taste before adding more.
  • Use ripe oranges: Sweet, juicy oranges give the smoothie its best balance of brightness and natural sweetness.

Texture tips

  • Blend before adding ice: Blending the oranges, dates and yoghurt first helps break down the dates fully before the mixture thickens.
  • Finish with ice: Adding the ice at the end creates a colder, frothier smoothie without diluting the flavour too early.

Make-ahead tips

  • Best served fresh: The smoothie has its brightest flavour and frothiest texture straight from the blender.
  • Short storage only: If needed, refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 day, then re-blend briefly with ice before serving.

  1. Peel the oranges, remove any pips, and break the segments into the blender. Pull the stones from the dates and add the dates to the blender as well.
  2. Add the Greek yogurt, orange blossom water, ground cinnamon and fine sea salt. Blend until the dates are fully broken down and the mixture looks smooth.
  3. Add the ice cubes and blend again until thick, cold and frothy, scraping down the sides if needed. Pour into a glass and serve straight away.

Tips

  • For the smoothest texture, choose very soft dates and blend the fruit with the yogurt first before adding the ice.
  • Orange blossom water can be strong, so start with the measured amount, taste, then blend in a tiny bit more only if you want a bolder floral note.

Substitutions

  • Replace Greek yogurt with yogurt for a slightly lighter, less thick smoothie.
  • Replace Orange Blossom Water with a little extra Orange for a brighter, less floral finish.

Storage

  • Refrigerate up to 1 days
  • Best served immediately. If needed, refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 day and re-blend briefly with a few Ice cubes to restore the texture.
