Ramadan Iftar Mezze Board with Hummus and Cacık
Why this recipe works
- Fast to assemble: Canned chickpeas and a no-cook yoghurt dip keep the board quick enough for a busy iftar spread.
- Fresh, balanced richness: Lemon in the hummus and tangy yoghurt in the cacık cut through the tahini and olive oil.
- Easy sharing format: The dips, olives and warm bread can be arranged simply on a board for grazing or served as part of a larger meal.

Authenticity notes
- Made for sharing: Mezze is naturally suited to the iftar table, where small dishes can be passed around and eaten with bread.
- Cacık style: This version is thick and spoonable thanks to Greek yoghurt; a looser yoghurt gives a more fluid, traditional-style texture.
- Bread and olives: Warm flatbread and briny olives are classic companions for creamy dips, adding softness, salt and contrast.
Ingredient notes
- Drain the cucumber well: Squeezing out excess liquid keeps the cacık creamy rather than watery.
- Use good tahini: A smooth, pourable tahini gives the hummus a cleaner sesame flavour and silkier texture.
- Dried mint works well: Dried mint gives cacık its familiar cool, herbal note; fresh mint can be used for a brighter finish.
Make-ahead tips
- Make the dips in advance: The hummus and cacık can be prepared earlier and kept covered in the fridge until serving.
- Keep components separate: Store the dips, olives and bread separately so the pita stays soft and the dips keep their texture.
- Warm the pita last: Heat the bread just before serving so it stays pliable for scooping and dipping.
Serving ideas
- Finish with olive oil: A small drizzle of extra virgin olive oil over the hummus adds gloss and richness.
- Build out the spread: Serve alongside lentil soup, stuffed vine leaves or a simple chopped salad for a fuller iftar meal.
- Serve for easy dipping: Place the dips in shallow bowls and tear the pita into pieces so guests can reach everything easily.

Instructions
- Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Finely grate the garlic and zest the lemon, then juice it.
- In a food processor, blend the chickpeas, tahini, most of the lemon juice, 2 tbsp olive oil, cumin, salt and water until smooth. Taste and add a little more lemon juice if you want it sharper, then scrape into a bowl and swirl the top.
- Coarsely grate the cucumber, then squeeze out excess liquid with your hands. In a bowl, mix the cucumber with the yogurt, remaining grated garlic, dried mint, 1 tbsp olive oil and salt until creamy.
- Warm the pita breads in a 200°C (390°F) oven for 3 to 5 minutes, just until soft and heated through. Cut or tear into dipping pieces.
- Arrange the hummus, cacık and olives on a board with the warm pita. Finish the hummus with a little extra olive oil from the swirl, and serve straight away.
Recipe notes
Tips
- For extra-smooth hummus, blend for a full 2 minutes, scrape down the bowl, then blend again until glossy.
- If serving later, keep the hummus and cacık covered in the fridge and warm the pita just before eating so it stays soft.
Substitutions
- Replace Greek yogurt with yogurt for a looser, more traditional-style cacık; reduce the water in the hummus slightly if you prefer a thicker board overall.
- Replace ground cumin with sweet paprika for a milder, warmer spice note in the hummus.
- Replace pita bread with naan bread, warmed the same way, for a slightly richer bread.
Storage
- Refrigerate up to 3 days
- Store hummus and cacık in separate airtight containers in the fridge. Stir the cacık before serving; refresh the hummus with a small drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a squeeze of lemon if needed. Warm pita fresh each time for best texture.
