Vegan Chocolate Avocado Mousse
Why this recipe works
- Naturally creamy: Ripe avocado gives the mousse body and smoothness without cream or eggs.
- No-cook method: Everything is blended together, then briefly chilled, making it fast and low-effort.
- Balanced chocolate flavour: Cocoa brings depth, maple syrup adds sweetness, and a little salt helps round out the richness.

Ingredient notes
- Use ripe avocados: Very ripe avocados blend more smoothly and have a milder flavour, which helps the chocolate stand out.
- Coconut milk adds richness: Coconut milk gives a fuller mousse; a lighter plant drink will make the texture softer and less rich.
Texture tips
- Blend thoroughly: Pause to scrape down the blender sides so no avocado or cocoa pockets remain.
- Hydrate the cocoa: An extra short blend helps the cocoa fully disperse, giving the mousse a smoother finish.
Make-ahead tips
- Make ahead: The mousse can be covered and refrigerated ahead of serving, then stirred briefly if any liquid separates.
- Best served chilled: Serve cold for the firmest, most mousse-like texture.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Halve the avocados, remove the stones, and scoop the flesh into a blender. Add the cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, fine sea salt, and coconut milk.
- Blend until completely smooth and thick, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. If it looks a little loose, keep blending for another 30 to 60 seconds to help it emulsify and thicken.
- Divide the mousse between 4 small serving dishes. Chill for 15 minutes for a firmer, spoonable texture, then serve.
Recipe notes
Tips
- Use very ripe avocados for the smoothest texture and mildest flavour.
- For a deeper chocolate taste, blend for an extra minute to fully hydrate the cocoa and remove any graininess.
- If serving to vulnerable groups, use good food hygiene and keep the mousse chilled, as it is a no-cook dessert.
Substitutions
- Replace maple syrup with acacia honey if you do not need the mousse to be vegan.
- Replace coconut milk with almond drink for a lighter mousse.
Storage
- Refrigerate up to 2 days
- Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Stir briefly before serving if any liquid separates, and serve cold.
