Air Fryer Lemon Yogurt Chicken
Why this recipe works
- Warm, balanced flavour: Cumin, coriander and paprika give the chicken savoury depth, while lemon and yoghurt keep the marinade bright and tangy.
- Fast hands-on work: The marinade comes together quickly, and the air fryer handles the cooking with little attention once the chicken is arranged in the basket.
- Juicy, reliable texture: Boneless chicken thighs stay tender during high-heat air frying, making them well suited to quick cooking and bold marinades.

Timing notes
- Marinating window: A short room-temperature marinade gives good flavour for a quick dinner; refrigerating for longer deepens the seasoning and tang.
- Before cooking: If the chicken has been chilled, let it come back towards room temperature before air frying so it cooks more evenly.
- Rest before serving: Resting the chicken briefly after cooking helps the juices settle before slicing or serving.
Texture tips
- For better colour: Let excess marinade drip off before the chicken goes into the basket; too much yoghurt on the surface can encourage steaming rather than browning.
- Cook in a single layer: Arrange the thighs with space around them so hot air can circulate and the edges can char lightly.
Ingredient notes
- Yoghurt choice: Greek yoghurt makes a thicker, slightly tangier coating, while regular yoghurt gives a looser marinade that still tenderises well.
- Paprika options: Sweet paprika keeps the flavour mellow; smoked paprika adds a deeper, more barbecue-like note.
- Best cut of chicken: Boneless, skinless thighs are forgiving in the air fryer because they stay moist while still browning at the edges.
Make-ahead tips
- Marinate ahead: The chicken can be coated and refrigerated ahead of cooking, making it useful for a low-effort dinner later in the day.
- Store salad separately: Keep the cooked chicken and cucumber-tomato salad in separate containers so the salad stays fresher.
- Reheating: Reheat cooked chicken in the air fryer at 180°C (355°F) until piping hot, checking that it does not dry out.

Ingredients
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the yogurt with the juice of half the lemon. Finely grate in the garlic and stir in the cumin, coriander, paprika, salt, pepper and olive oil.
- Add the chicken thighs and coat thoroughly. Marinate for 20 minutes at room temperature, or refrigerate for up to 12 hours for more flavour (bring back towards room temperature before cooking).
- Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (390°F) for 3 minutes. Arrange the chicken in a single layer and air fry for 14 to 18 minutes, turning halfway, until golden with lightly charred edges and cooked through.
- While the chicken cooks, chop the cucumber and tomatoes and toss together with a squeeze of the remaining lemon juice and a pinch of salt and pepper from the measured amounts, to taste. Rest the chicken for 5 minutes, then serve with the salad and extra lemon juice if you like.
Recipe notes
Tips
- For more colour, make sure the chicken is as dry as possible when it goes into the basket; excess marinade can steam rather than brown.
- If cooking in batches, keep the first batch warm on a plate loosely covered while the second batch cooks, then slice and serve together.
- Food safety: ensure the chicken is cooked all the way through before serving, especially for vulnerable groups.
Substitutions
- Replace Yogurt with Greek yogurt for a thicker, slightly tangier marinade.
- Replace Sweet paprika with Smoked paprika for a deeper, smokier flavour.
Storage
- Refrigerate up to 3 days
- Refrigerate cooked chicken in a sealed container for up to 3 days; store the salad separately and eat within 1 day. Reheat chicken in the air fryer at 180°C (355°F) for 4 to 6 minutes until piping hot; freeze cooked chicken for up to 2 months and thaw overnight before reheating.
