Air Fryer Spiced Chickpeas
Why this recipe works
- Crisp, dry finish: Drying the chickpeas before cooking helps the air fryer remove surface moisture quickly, giving a crunchier result.
- Fast snack method: Canned chickpeas and a short air-fryer cook time keep the recipe practical for everyday snacking.
- Smoky savoury coating: Smoked paprika, cumin, garlic and black pepper bring warmth and depth without making the chickpeas hot.

Texture tips
- Dry thoroughly first: Pat the chickpeas very dry and let them air-dry briefly before seasoning; excess moisture is the main barrier to crispness.
- Serve soon after cooking: They are crispest shortly after air-frying. If they soften, return them to the air fryer at 200°C (390°F) for a few minutes.
Common mistakes
- Watch the spices: If the air fryer runs hot, lower the temperature to 190°C (375°F) and cook a little longer so the paprika and garlic do not catch.
- Salt at the end: Adding the fine sea salt after cooking helps it cling while avoiding moisture being drawn out too early.
Ingredient notes
- Use canned chickpeas: Canned chickpeas keep this recipe quick and consistent; drain and rinse them well before drying.
- Adjust the paprika: Sweet paprika gives a softer, less smoky flavour, while smoked paprika makes the snack more savoury and robust.
Serving ideas
- Use as a crunchy topping: Scatter over salads, grain bowls or soups for texture and a savoury spiced accent.
- Serve with drinks: Their salty, smoky flavour works well as a simple snack alongside cold beer, sparkling water or a citrusy soft drink.

Instructions
- Drain and rinse the chickpeas, then pat them very dry with a clean tea towel. Leave them to air-dry for 5 minutes so they crisp more quickly.
- Tip the chickpeas into a bowl and toss with the olive oil, smoked paprika, ground cumin, black pepper and ground garlic until evenly coated.
- Air-fry at 200°C (390°F) for 12 to 15 minutes, shaking every 4 to 5 minutes, until dry, crisp and deep golden. If needed, add 2 to 3 minutes until the centre is crunchy rather than chalky.
- While still hot, sprinkle over the fine sea salt and toss to coat. Cool for 2 to 3 minutes before serving warm or at room temperature.
Recipe notes
Tips
- Add the fine sea salt at the end so it clings well and does not draw out moisture during cooking.
- If your air-fryer runs hot, drop the temperature to 190°C (375°F) and cook a few minutes longer to prevent the spices catching.
Substitutions
- Replace Smoked paprika with Sweet paprika for a milder, less smoky flavour.
- Replace Olive oil with Extra-virgin olive oil for a richer aroma.
Storage
- Best eaten the day they are made. Store at room temperature in an uncovered bowl for a few hours to keep them crisp, then re-crisp in the air-fryer at 200°C (390°F) for 2 to 4 minutes if they soften.
