Air Fryer Berry Crumble
Why this recipe works
- Crisp, buttery topping: Cold butter rubbed into flour and oats creates a crumbly topping with golden edges and a lightly textured bite.
- Bright fruit flavour: Lemon zest and juice balance the sweetness of the berries and keep the filling lively rather than heavy.
- Air fryer efficiency: The air fryer gives the crumble a bubbling fruit base and browned topping in a compact dish without heating a full oven.

Texture tips
- For a crisper crumble: Scatter the topping loosely over the berries rather than pressing it down, so hot air can move around the oat mixture.
- Avoid a wet topping: Bake until the fruit is actively bubbling at the edges; this shows the juices have thickened enough beneath the crumble.
Ingredient notes
- Fresh or frozen berries: Frozen berries can be used straight from the freezer, but they usually need a little longer to bubble fully.
- Adjust the lemon: Very sweet berries benefit from an extra squeeze of lemon juice just before serving to sharpen the flavour.
Timing notes
- Let it stand briefly: A short rest after cooking allows the berry juices to settle and thicken slightly, making the crumble easier to serve.
- Best served warm: The contrast between hot fruit and crisp topping is strongest soon after cooking, before the crumble absorbs too much steam.
Make-ahead tips
- Reheat in the air fryer: Warm leftovers at 170°C (340°F) until hot and bubbling, covering loosely with foil if the topping begins to darken.
- Freezing leftovers: Cool completely before freezing in an airtight container, then thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Instructions
- Heat the air fryer to 180°C (355°F). Put the mixed berries in a baking dish that fits your air fryer basket. Add half the caster sugar, then finely zest the lemon over the fruit and squeeze in 1 tbsp of juice; toss to combine.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the plain flour, rolled oats, ground cinnamon and the remaining caster sugar. Cut the unsalted butter into small cubes, then rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingertips until you have a crumbly mixture with some pea-sized bits. This gives you a crisp topping with a little texture.
- Scatter the crumble evenly over the berries without pressing it down. Air fry at 180°C (355°F) for 18 to 22 minutes, until the fruit is bubbling at the edges and the topping is golden. If the top colours too quickly, reduce to 170°C (340°F) for the final minutes.
- Rest the crumble for 5 minutes so the juices thicken slightly. Serve warm, straight from the dish. Add more lemon juice to taste if your berries are very sweet.
Recipe notes
Tips
- Keep the Unsalted butter cold for the crumble; warm butter makes a dense topping rather than a crisp one.
- If using frozen Mixed berries, do not thaw them first; add 3 to 5 minutes to the cook time and bake until the fruit is actively bubbling.
Substitutions
- Replace Ground cinnamon with mixed spice for a more classic, warming flavour.
- Replace Lemon with orange for a softer citrus note.
Storage
- Refrigerate up to 3 days
- Cool completely, then cover and refrigerate. Reheat in the air fryer at 170°C (340°F) for 6 to 10 minutes until hot and bubbling; if the topping starts to darken, cover the dish loosely with foil while reheating. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 2 months and thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
