Air Fryer Chicken Tenders
Why this recipe works
- Crisp panko coating: Panko breadcrumbs create a lighter, crunchier crust than standard fine breadcrumbs, especially when pressed firmly onto the chicken.
- Fast cooking: Chicken tenders cook quickly in the air fryer, making this a practical option for a crisp breaded chicken dinner in under 30 minutes.
- Clear coating method: The flour, egg and breadcrumb sequence helps the crust adhere properly and gives reliable results without deep-frying.

Texture tips
- For extra crunch: Press the panko firmly onto each tender and let the coating stand briefly before air-frying so the crumbs adhere well.
- Keep space in the basket: Arrange the tenders in a single layer with gaps between them; overcrowding traps steam and softens the coating.
Common mistakes
- Cooking too many at once: Air-fry in batches if needed. A crowded basket prevents the hot air from circulating evenly and can leave the crumbs pale or soft.
- Letting the coating outrun the chicken: If the crumbs brown too quickly, reduce the heat to 190°C (375°F) and cook a little longer so the chicken finishes gently.
Ingredient notes
- Use panko for the lightest crust: Panko gives a more open, crisp texture than regular breadcrumbs, which produce a finer and slightly denser coating.
- Paprika adds colour, not heat: Sweet paprika brings a savoury warmth and golden colour without making the tenders spicy.
Make-ahead tips
- Best served immediately: The coating is at its crispest straight from the air fryer after a short rest, so serve the tenders while hot.
- Reheat in the air fryer: For leftovers, reheat at 190°C (375°F) until piping hot and crisp; microwaving will soften the crumb coating.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Heat the air fryer to 200°C (390°F) for 3 minutes. Meanwhile, set up 3 bowls: one with the flour, paprika, ground garlic, salt and pepper; one with the egg whisked; and one with the panko breadcrumbs mixed with the olive oil.
- Coat each chicken tender in the seasoned flour, shaking off the excess. Dip into the egg, then press firmly into the panko so the crumbs adhere well.
- Arrange the tenders in the basket in a single layer, leaving a little space between each. Air-fry for 10 to 12 minutes, turning halfway, until deeply golden and the chicken is cooked through.
- Rest for 1 to 2 minutes so the crust sets, then serve straight away while hot and crisp. Cook any remaining tenders in a second batch rather than overcrowding.

Tips
- For the crunchiest coating, press the panko on firmly and leave the breaded tenders to stand for 5 minutes before air-frying.
- If your air fryer runs hot, drop the temperature to 190°C (375°F) and cook a minute longer to prevent the coating browning before the chicken is cooked.
Substitutions
- Replace Olive oil with Vegetable oil for a more neutral flavour.
- Replace Panko breadcrumbs with Breadcrumbs for a finer, slightly less airy crust.
Storage
- Refrigerate up to 2 days
- Cool completely, then refrigerate in a covered container. Reheat in the air fryer at 190°C (375°F) for 4 to 6 minutes until piping hot and crisp; avoid microwaving as it softens the coating.
